Our guide school goes beyond preparing someone to become a river guide.  You will become a commercial whitewater professional. Those looking to work for Lakota must pre-interview before signing up for our guide school.  During the course, each participant is evaluated on his/her performance and work ethic. Our course is designed to train potential candidates to work for Lakota, but it is not limited to those seeking a job with us. Often the school is filled with individuals / private boaters wanting to learn about rafting the correct and safe way.

Our course is a 2 week intensive training class in May Monday through Friday from dawn till dusk. Colorado State Parks requires a minimum of 50 hours of instructional training... we go beyond that.

During the course, students will learn how to read water, to identify river features and to navigate successfully through rapids. Techniques for guiding paddle rafts and oar boats are covered in detail. Students learn river and shoreline etiquette to respect the other commercial companies and private boaters. River rescue and emergency procedures are discussed but covered more intensely during the SRT Mather Rescue Course preceding the Guide School session. Students are also given the opportunity to learn about multi-day rigging and planning during an overnight outing.

Most guide schools give you a sample of what is out there in guiding, but we prepare you to be a professional.

Fill-out our application, mail it in and then e-mail our Guide School to schedule an interview!
